Congratulations to the Glynn Valley Hotel, Glyn Ceiriog for an excellent dinner, where members of the Ceiriog Valley Bowling Club held their Annual Dinner and Presentation Evening on Friday, 5 December 2008 together with Mr and Mrs Reg Jones of Overton Bowling Club as guests for the evening. The evening and dinner was enjoyed by all. Following the dinner, Mr Reg Jones presented the trophies to the winners and runners-up of the clubs competitions over the 2008 season.
The 2008 season has finally come to an end with the A team managing to secure their Division I status after some good results towards the end of the season.
Craig Davies was by far the side's most consistent bowler and as a result, finished 14th in the league averages, having won 15 of the 20 games he played in. The real success story of the season was the way both 'B' and 'C' teams performed. The 'B' team, under the captaincy of John Warren, ran away with the Division 4 title by a margin of 25 points. There were some superb individual performances. Out of approximately 90 bowlers in the league, John Warren finished 2nd in the averages, winning 19 of the 22 games he played in. This was closely followed by Lee Jones (5th), Ron Morris (8th), Wyn Hughes (12th) and Arfona Hughes. Arfona Hughes was the top lady bowler in the club, winning 14 of the 22 games that she played in. The newly promoted 'C' team, captained by Charles (Mink) Edwards, also bowled well. The team finished 4th in Division 4, winning 12 and drawing 1 of their 22 games. The title of champion bowler in Division 4 and club merit winner went to Arwyn Roberts, who won 20 of the 21 games he played in. Geraint Edwards finished 23rd in the league averages winning 12 of the 21 matches he played in. Club Competitions Consolation Cup: In the last club competition of the season, Ron Pierpoint beat Lou Edwards in a closely fought final. The club is now looking forward to securing a new lease on the green in the near future. This will, hopefully, ensure a good standard of Crown Green Bowls remains in the Valley and that its facilities will be available to all ages and abilities. Anybody wishing to join the club for the start of next season (March 2009), should contact a member or myself on 07970 878875. Simon Pugh, chairman As we come to the end of another bowling season, I am pleased to report that the 'A' team have secured their 1st Division status for another year. Club Competitions: Fours Competition—Wyn Hughes, John Warren, Milton Edwards beat Arwel Roberts, Mike Chapman, Geraint Edwards.
After a difficult first half of the season, the 'A' team have managed to gain some valuable points in their quest to secure Division One status next year. The last two home games have seen the team score eighteen points out of a possible twenty, with solid performances against Llangollen and Cynwyd. A valuable three points away to The Church Club from Oswestry has also helped the cause,. Moving the team a couple of places up the league. John Jones has found some of last years form and has recorded the best card twice in the last month.
The 'B' and 'C' teams continue to excel in Division Four with some excellent individual performances. With six games to go before the season ends, both teams will figure in the battle for promotion to Division Three. Members of the 'B' and 'C' teams did really well in the Oswestry Leagues 4-5-6 Doubles Trophy. The club was well represented at the competition and after a long days bowling at Chirk, managed to get two pairings into the final. Last year's winners, Arwel and Arwyn Roberts faced John Warren and thirteen year old Dyfan Hughes in the final, the latter pairing coming out 21–15 winners. It is also worth mentioning that Arfona and Wyn Hughes reached the semi-final and Geraint and Charles Edwards were losing quarter finalists. The club played host to two Oswestry League competitions during July. The first was the Oswestry Ladies Merit competition which attracted twenty-six bowlers and just as many supporters. The club was well represented, but unfortunately this was not to be our year. Club members provided refreshments throughout the day and it was pleasing to hear all the nice comments that were made with regards the excellent condition of the green and the hospitality shown to all who attended. The following weekend, the Oswestry League held its Youth competition on the green, and although numbers were down on previous years, it was again pleasing to hear all the positive comments that were made. There have been no club competitions this month due to holidays etc., but these will resume in August with the Fours Competition, Captains Day and Consolation Cup to be played for. Anybody who would like to have a go at Crown Green Bowling between now and the end of season in October will be made most welcome. Please come along on a Tuesday or Wednesday night or contact a club member. Simon Pugh, chairman
The first half of the season has now been completed. It has seen the 'A' team struggle after a good start and is currently near the foot of Division 1. Craig Davies is again bowling with his usual consistency and stands in eighth place in the league averages.
The 'B' team is having an excellent season and are currently standing in first place having won ten of the twelve games that they have played in Division 4. There have been good individual performances from all team members and this reflects in the current league averages which sees John warren, Lee Jones and Ron Morris all featuring in the top ten positions. The 'C' team, following on from promotion last year, have settled in really well in Division 4 and are currently standing in sixth place. Arwyn Roberts is having a terrific season having won eleven of the twelve games he played in. The two teams met other in the league recently and after some very close games the 'B' team came out on to claiming seven of the ten points on offer. Due to a player shortage, Ted Jones was pulled out of competitive retirement and used all of his 'green' knowledge to pull off a crucial win for the 'B' team. Six members of the club recently competed in the Oswestry League 456 competition. Arwyn Roberts had a good day, narrowly getting beat in the final. Wyn Hughes was a losing semi-finalist. Club Competition Results Swan Shield: Wynn Hughes beat Gary Davies 21–18 Pheasant Shield: John Jones beat Meirion Phillips 21–17 The club would like to wish those members who are currently not in the best of health, a speedy recovery as their presence on match days and club competitions are greatly missed. Simon Pugh, chairman
The bowling green opened in April 2008 in readiness for the new season.
Members have been busy during the close season doing essential maintenance work on the clubhouse and bowling green . The roof of the clubhouse was in particular need of attention; special thanks must go the Community Council for their donation towards roof repairs and Jeff Davies who carried out the work. The bowling green is in excellent condition and is generally regarded as one of the best playing surfaces in the league most of which is due to the hard work of Ron Pierpoint and Arthur Jones. The club secretary is currently in talks with the Community Council with regards to the renewal of the twenty-one year lease which expires at the end of the year. On the playing side, all three teams are doing well in their respective league fixtures. The 'A' team, who play on Tuesday nights in Division One, are lying mid table with three wins from seven games played. The 'B' team is currently top of Division Four, with five wins from seven games played. The newly promoted 'C' team are also doing very well in Division Four, lying mid table after seven games. The 'B' and 'C' teams play alternative Wednesday nights. We are keen to attract new members, especially those of school age. So as to meet British Crown Green regulations, John Warren has taken on the role of Child Protection Officer for the club. If any individual, school or organization would like to use the facilities, tuition and equipment is available on request. Please come along on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening and introduce yourself to a member.
