The concert given by Choral Variations was held at the Institute on Friday, 17 January was well attended. The conductor was Owain Roberts and the accompanist was Kevin Wilkins. Separate items were given by individual members of the choir, including the trio Lleisiau'r Nant. The guest soloist was local man, Roger Payne, who absolutely wowed the audience. The choir was introduced by Institute chairman, Idris Davies, and comprehensive vote of thanks was proposed by the treasurer, Frank Jones. A raffle and refreshments were organized by Institute committee members, the proceeds were for the Institute funds.
A successful fund raising evening was held at the Institute on Friday, 14 November, with musical entertainment being provided by Madog, who had been introduced by the Institute chairman, Mr Idris Davies. The entertainment had followed a supper which had been provided by the committee, who had also provided raffle prizes. A comprehensive vote of thanks was given by the institute treasurer, Mr Frank Jones.
A meeting of the Institute Management Committee took place on Monday, 3 November presided over by the chairman, Mr Idris davies. It was pleasing to note that the new hand rails are set in place alongside the steps at the entrance to the building; also that the plaques in memory of both Islwyn Ffowc Elis and his wife, Eirlys are also in place. Arrangements were made for the purchase of new stage curtains, following the receipt of a grant towards their cost.
It was decided to seek advice from a WCBC museums expert regarding the displays of various items at the museum situated at the rear of the institute. members were named to form a sub-committee to discuss the form of the Centenary celebrations to take place in 2011. The treasurer presented a favourable financial report and he was thanked for his meticulous work. Final arrangements have been made for the Supper and Song Evening to be held on Friday, 14 November in the main hall. After much discussion and with disappointment and regret it was decided to close the Snooker Rooms immediately because of the problems caused by bad behaviour.
A meeting of the Institute Management Committee was held on Monday, 1 September and was presided over by the vice-chairman Mrs Rona bates. Members were pleased to note that the painting of St David, which is a quarter size copy of the original one in the Houses of Parliament at Westminster has now been cleaned and is back in place. The work on the remembrance Garden at the rear of the Institute has been completed plus all the books have been placed back in their cupboards.
The treasurer gave a satisfactory financial report. Members were reminded that the building will be 100 years old in 2011, and were asked to give some thought as to what should take place during the centenary celebrations.
The Annual meeting of the Entertainments Committee was held recently, when all officers were re-elected. Chairman, Idris Davies; vice-chairman and treasurer, Frank Jones; secretary, Mrs Sydney Davies. Other members agreed to take various responsibilities. The treasurer presented a favourable financial report and it was felt that the previous year's fund raising had been successful. Arrangements were then made for this winter's entertainment. It is hoped to hold a concert of Local Talent at the Institute on Thursday, 13 November and a Choral Variations have been booked for a concert on January 16 2009 . Cut Lloi have been booked to give a concert on November 13 2009 ; this concert will take place at the Oliver Jones Memorial Hall, proceeds of which will be for the Ceiriog Memorial Institute.
A very special occasion took place at the Institute on Monday. 7 April, when Sian Solomons, accompanied by her husband Peter and son William, gave two antique Carver Chairs to the Institute. Sian is the daughter of the late Islwyn Ffowc and Eirlys Elis, and the chairs were presented in memory of her parents.
Islwyn Ffowc Elis, a native of Glyn Ceiriog, was a renowned Welsh Author, who passed away in 2004. One of his books, Cysgod y Cryman was declared Book of the Century in 1999. And has been translated into many languages. The family were greeted by members of the Institute Management Committee, then both the president, Judge Geoffrey Kilfoil and the chairman, Mr Idris Davies expressed their delight and gratitude to Sian and family for these unique gifts. Mr Davies then presented Sian with a Commemorative Plate which bears an illustration of the Institute. The family then joined the committee members in a traditional Welsh Tea, before being given a tour of the Institute and also the Museum, where there is one showcase expressly for Islwyn Ffowc Elis memorabilia. A meeting of the Management Committee was held at the Islwyn Ffowc Elis Room on 3 March and was presided over by the chairman, Mr Idris Davies. A new member, Mr Clwyd Davies was welcomed. Members were very pleased to see the new chairs, these have mainly been obtained by the local Merched y Wawr, with a contribution by Meibion Ceiriog. The new floor on the stage has been completed, this voluntary work is much appreciated.
It was decided that members meet at the Institute after Easter, to place all the books back in the bookcases. It was noted that scaffolding will be required for when the portraits are re-hung and also for when the painting of Saint David is re-hung. The treasurer reported that the insurance has been paid. It was noted the talk given by the secretary, Miss Einwen Jones on the shops in the village during the 30s and 40s, had been a great success and a good boost to the Institute funds. It was noted that this talk had been recorded. A further fund raising event will take place on 24 April, when a concert will be given by the George Formby Society.
Many members of the public were fascinated by the talk given by Miss Einwen Jones at the Institute on Friday, 15 February. She spoke of all the shops that were in the village of Glyn Ceiriog during the 1930s and 1940s.
During that time there were over 30 shops within the village, these included numerous small sweet shops, three shoe shops, three butchers, one which sold New Zealand lamb only, two barbers and even a photographer, as well as several grocers and clothing shops. Refreshments were served to all present by committee members. Proceeds were towards the Institute funds
The annual meeting of the management committee was held at the Institute on November 28, when all the officials were re-elected, as follows: president, Judge Geoffrey Kilfoil; chairman, Mr Peter Davies; vice-chair, Mr Idris Davies; secretary, Miss Einwen Jones; treasurer, Mr Frank Jones. This was followed by the regular meeting, when members expressed their gratitude to the members of Meibion Ceiriog, who have worked hard on Saturday mornings on the gardens at the rear of the Institute. This voluntary effort is much appreciated.
It was reported that remedial work to the main hall will commence in a couple of weeks. The draft of the publicity leaflet designed and prepared by Mrs Gaynor Jones was seen and approved. The Vienna Clock, repaired by Mr Theo Davies, and now in place in the committee room, was much admired. Committee members gave their permission for the Christmas Tree, organised by the Community Council, to be placed in front of the Institute. It was noted that rehearsals have now commenced for the two plays to be performed by members of the local Drama Group, on March 17, in aid of the Institute. |
