Morys, HUW [Eos Ceiriog 1622 1709], poets second son of Morris ap

John ap John ab Ednyfed of Hafodgynfor in the parish of Llangollen, Denbs.
Although he spent the greater part of his long life at Pontymeibion in the parish of Llansilin, it appears that Huw was not born there as is generally
supposed, but that he moved there with his father and family about the year 1647.
We know that his grandfather, John ap John, owned certain lands in the commotes of Rhiwlas and Hafodgynfor, at the time of his marriage to Gwen, daughter of Thomas ap Llywelyn ap John of Rhiwlas.

As far as we know the poet had two brothers, John, his senior [it appears that Huw made his home with him], and Humphrey, his junior.
In a poem 'Ar ofyn gostegion yn amser Cromwel', the poet complains of his seven year's apprenticeship to learn a trade. and this appears to be the only evidence in support of the oft-quoted tradition that he was apprenticed to a tanner at Gwaliau in Overton, Flints.

It is said that he forsook his apprenticeship and returned home to assist his father on the farm.
That he was well patronised by the gentry of Llansilin and district is amply proved in his poems, for time and again he acknowledges his indebtedness to Sir William Willaims [16341700], Glasgoed [Speaker of the House of Commons], the Myddelton family of Chirk Castle, William Owen of Brogyntyn, and others.

Huw was ever an ardent churchman, and a staunch royalist.
He was warden of Llansilin parish church, and alternately criticised the 'Wrexham Committee,' and sang the praises of the royalist cause with great gusto.
He escaped the rough treatment experienced by William Phylip of Ardudwy, by adopting a much more careful (and subtle) means of criticising his opponents during the Commonwealth period - he resorted to the method used in the Vaticinatory poems of the 15th Cent, of giving his characters the names of appropriate animals.

Huw Morys wrote his poems so that they could be sung to popular tunes, and thus became well known throughout Wales.
He was buried 31 Aug, 1709 on the south side of Llansilin parish church.
In the church wall above his grave there is a stained glass window whereon are inscribed his famous englynion cyffes (confessional verses),
while another memorial window to him may be seen in the east wall.

ln front of Pontymeibion farmhouse a memorial in stone has been erected.

In the absence of Joy Boston, Mandy Connor read an uplifting poem written by her mother entitled, 'April' which praised the awakening of nature in Spring.
Margaret Swift read her delegate's report from the Annual Council Meeting held at Corwen Pavilion on 19 March. Our Janet Jones collected the morning speaker, Fay Mansell, the NFWI Chairman at Chirk Station.

Fay explained her long road to becoming chairman and talked of her experiences travelling around the country as an ambassador for us, listening to views of members and the difference the WI had made to their lives and those of others.
The WI has always been a force for good and Fay saw the future as rosy as younger members are very keen to learn the traditional skills the WI has to offer.

There is an increase in membership with new institutes starting up in the workplace and the latest at Goldsmith College.
During the afternoon Keith Smithies entertained us with some wonderful floral arrangements.
He was also very amusing and imparted tips on how to prepare flowers and foliage, in addition to a few tricks of the trade.
Mandy advised the meeting of the 'letter writing campaign' to inform local politicians as to the views of the latest Community meeting in support of Ysgol Pantfadog.
lt was agreed that Margaret would send the necessary letters advising that as an organisation that was founded in 1915, education has always been one of our ideals, there, we feel very strongly that this small bilingual Welsh school should be allowed to continue its valuable work.

'Lavender Lade'
Yorkshire Tea Bags received from Taylors of Harrogate were distributed together with details of how we can continue to help save trees around the world.
In the twenty years the WI has been involved, three million trees have been planted and a 27 acre, 32,000 tree wood created in Ethiopia that has transformed lives.
Ann welcomed our speaker for the evenings Sandra, The Lavender Lady who was dressed in a magnificent purple over-dress, lace cuffs embroidered collar and

cap, topped by a black wide-brimmed hat of a 17th century townswomen.
Sandra has been a member of the Sealed Knot Society for 28 years and had originally been a 'camp follower', before taking on the more lady-like job of a 'lavender lade'.
The Society has been in existence for forty years and they enact battles from the English Civil War during the early 1640's.
Sandra explained how the Romans had first introduced lavender to Britain, and its subtle smell had been used up to and including the present day to calm the senses, help migraine, stop bleeding, as an antiseptic and analgesic, in addition to being an aid for sleeping.
Sandra displayed many of the beautiful and useful items she makes from lavender that she obtains from France and has to be cut at the beginning of the year.
Ann gave a vote of thanks for a fascinating insight into the Sealed Knot and the fragrant display of her wares.
Everyone enjoyed a delicious cake baked and decorated by Ann in celebration of our Institute's 75th Anniversary.

No one watching Britain's Got Talent expected much from when mobile phone salesmen Paul Potts, Scottish housewife Susan Boyle nor Welsh schoolboy Shaheen
Jafargholi took the stage. The judges looked sceptically at one another when the nervous, unassuming, ordinary looking singers announced what they would sing, until they opened their mouths.

They begun to sing, it was magical! The crowd roared and stood in amazement, while the judges sat stunned in tearful silence.
These were the greatest surprises that any television programme have ever had, in large part because they came wrapped in such an ordinary package

ln the Old Testament, the rescuer of Israel arrived at the battlefield in most unlikely form - a young shepherd bop! Samuel, 17 chapter, tells you what happened. King Saul and his entire army were surprised when David defeated Goliath and won the day.
They needed to learn the way that God looks at people.
He said to the prophet Samuel, 'The Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance but the Lord looks at the heart,' 1 Samuel, 16 chapter, 7th verse.
If we judge others only by their outer appearance, we might miss the wonderful surprise of what's in their heart.
O Lord, we are so quick to judge, Though much is veiled from sight; Lord, may we see how just You are to guide us in what's right.

During the following evening the AGM dinner was held at the Glyn Valley Hotel.
