Thank you to all of the people who had Eisteddod competitors to stay with them this year. The valley played host to forty-four members of the Tyreso choir from Sweden, the Copenhagen girls choir stayed in the Plas Ceiriog, Kurdish dancers in the Oliver Jones Memorial Hall, Madrigal singers in Canolfen Ceiriog with soloists from Ireland, Hong Kong and many others.
We had a great time with the Swedish Choir and good fun with lots of informal singing on Friday evening. Thank you again to everyone who contributed to this successful week. Anjie, Lyn and Merle

19:00 am in Llanarmon Village Hall As we are sure you are aware the 2007 Berwyn Festival held in May was a great success, and it is now time to begin making plans for future events which will maintain and develop the original vision of the festival. The group who helped to organise the 2007 Festival would now like to invite all members of the local community (the whole of the Ceriog Valley !) who feel they could offer ideas or support of any form to attend the above mentioned meeting on Wednesday, 12 September. If you are unable to attend the meeting but wish to become involved then you can contact the group by email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. July has carried on from June with unprecedented amounts of rain. One consequence has been the absence of the migratory moths and butterflies.
Last year we enjoyed humming bird hawk moths in good numbers on the honeysuckle growing through our hedge, but none yet this year. Also I have yet to see my first red admiral. These have the long flight from the continent and large delicate wings and large raindrops do not go well together! Much more cheerful, my top sighting of the month was three peregrines together above Dolywern. Two were definitely young ones, the third, I suspect, was as well but it did not come close enough to be certain. Another pleasant sight was a pack of six stoats, probably mother and five kits, hunting the verges. Anyone know the correct collective noun for stoats? Our local bird population has done well in this year’s breeding, we have young blue, great and coal tits, great spotted woodpeckers, jays, nuthatches, chaffinch, garden warblers and dunnocks. We have also gained some new visitors in the form of siskins and marsh tits but there do not seem to be any young house sparrows. This does seem to be a species in trouble, I wonder why? The snails are out in force on our hostas, we suffer as the only slug and snail killer we will use is ferric phosphate, which is harmless to birds, mammals and insects but not as effective as the metaldehyde forms. Our rewards for tatty hostas are the song thrush in our garden. The weather during the last few days of the month has been better, let’s see what the next few weeks will bring. Tom Baker. Tel. 712835

Madame Marie Curie holds her place in history as a pioneer in the study of radioactivity. In 1903 , she was the rst woman to win the Nobel Prize, capturing the Honour in Physics. Then in 1911, she received a second Nobel Prize, this time for Chemistry.
Such a wonderful contribution did not come without tremendous sacrifice. Madame Curie died of leukemia caused by prolonged exposure to radioactive materials. Even today, scholars who wish to read her handwritten journals and lab reports must wear protective clothing because these archives are still radioactive. No one today would approach radioactive material without protection. But many seem unconcerned about exposure to the dangers of sin. Psalm 1 warns us against sinful attitudes, speech and behaviour (verses 1, 4 and 6). Obedience to God's law is a spiritual safeguard from sin and its deadly consequences. The psalmist also wrote, "Your Word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against You" (119 :11) Madame Curie didn't know about the serious health dangers of exposure to radioactivity, and we are so greatfull for the Hospices set up by Nightingale House and Hope House. But God has given us ample warning about the dangers of sin. Let's apply daily what we read in His life giving book, the Bible. Thy Word is a lamp to my feet, A light to my path alway, To guide and to save me from sin And show me the heavenly way. Sellers Let us remember that the Bible will tell you what is wrong before you have done it! D.L.
