My pleasure in walking in the Ceiriog valley
is enhanced by living in the deserts of the Middle East for many years, every day now I feast my eyes on an hundred shades of green and a landscape abounding in life. We should remember, though, that this landscape is formed over many centuries of our farmers, using the land in a fashion that has allowed it to be productive and keeping it like this without huge amounts of pesticides and artificial fertilisers. They are having a rough time and need our support as the restrictions on animal movement imposed over the last few months have made a hard lifestyle even more difficult. These days I look at the labels every time I buy meat and only purchase if it is at least British, and preferably Welsh. In the last week of September I walked with my wife through the woods above Ty’n-y-Fron and watched four young ravens showing off their flying skills to each other doing barrel rolls and Immelman turns over the trees. It’s fortunate for me that both ravens and crows are such vocal birds as beyond about a hundred yards I would have problems differentiating them. Jean, my wife, says that ravens always make her think of a dog with a very sore throat trying to bark! My garden is much quieter now, all this years young have been unceremoniously ejected by the residents. Let us hope that next year will be as successful here as this summer has been. The Church Committee would like to thank all the generous donors on the Patronal Festival Gift Day in July . A total of some £500 was raised, a very welcome sum in helping to meet the expenses of the Church. Thank you.
Now that the general clearance and tidying up of the churchyard is largely complete, it is hoped that the large rubbish heap by the river wall can be reduced over time. Only 'green' rubbish, grass and dead flowers should be placed on this heap, all other materials, discarded wired wreaths, plastic flowers and any other non-vegetable matter should be placed in the black wheelie-bin at the South-Western end of the church. Anyone willing to give a little time, however short, to help keep the churchyard in order, grass cutting, removal of ivy, weed control etc. would be very welcome. Please contact Derek Simpson on (01691) 718323.

Congratulations to Mrs Edna Winstanley on being awarded the First Prize in the Senior Citizens Gardens Competition at Rossendale in Lancashire . She was a frequent winner of the the Community Council Competitions when she lived in Y Gamer. She is still a regular reader of the Glyn News.
Congratulations to Lowri Evans on being chosen to play for Denbighshire u14's Netball team. Well done!
Congratulations to Gaynor and Martin de Luchi, proprietors of the Hand Hotel, Llanarmon, as the hotel has been awarded a 4 star grading by the AA in the Inn catergory. This is a major achievement and a rewarding confirmation of the work they and their staff have put in over the last four years. Congratulations also to the head chief, Grant Mulholland and his team, Eifion Edwards and Jan Orritt, who have won a covetted AA Rosette for the quality of their food as well as an Egg-cup award for outstanding breakfasts.
A meeting of the Cytun Committee was held at the Christian Centre on 18 September and was presided over by the chairman, the Rev Philip Clarke. The meeting commenced with a prayer, and then members stood for a minute's silence in tribute to the memory of the late Mrs Marian Roberts. Mrs Roberts was a faithful member of this committee and was joint secretary, who ensured that minutes were kept in Welsh as well as English, she will be greatly missed. It was noted that planned Pentecost Walk around the village did not take place due to the torrential rain on the day. In place of the annual outing, some members had attended Theatre Clwyd to see the film African Snow, which was shown on the 200 th Anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade,
It was agreed to hold the Cytun Carol Service in December in Pontfadog Church , it was hoped that pupils from Ysgol Pontfadog would be able to participate. The week of Prayer for Christian Unity Service will take place in Seion next year. An Easter card will be delivered to all homes in the Valley again next year, and a leaflet of welcome to all newcomers was seen and approved. The treasurer, Miss M. E. Roberts gave a financial report. Members were pleased to note that Mrs Mair James agreed to take over the work of translator.
May I take this opportunity to say a most sincere 'Thank you' to all the people who helped me when I had a fall outside the Ceiriog Canolfan Centre on Saturday, 29 September. I was very fortunate–no damage–just a few bruises.
It's wonderful to live in such a caring community. Once again thank you. Eileen McBride
Our lovely Japanese volunteer Nao has gone touring Europe before going home. We were all sad, as we have nobody to help us, so if anyone would like to volunteer please contact Simon for information.
The Harvest Festival is coming in thick and fast from many different venues and we welcome it greatly and thank all who have donated, very much. Several people are going on the canal from Welshpool on the fourth lets hope for reasonable weather. Christmas shopping has started and we have two takers already. One resident is going on a belated holiday to Sheffield and for two weeks. As far as we know there will be only one trip to Blackpool this year before the lights end. On Wednesday, 31 October it is the Halloween night party with lots of ghoulish fun and a few games. We have our Christmas Market on the 24 November at 2pm 'til five'sh so please come along and bring your children to see Santa, a selection of different stalls and enjoy some Gluwein and BBQ. Some of the Residents and even some visitors from Japan have made mincemeat and Christmas cakes for the “yummiest” competition judged on Christmas Eve afternoon. Here is hoping you have had a good October and will have the same with November. Regards Diane Gittins.
Since writing in the Glyn News in April when 'The Garth Hillside Organic Garden' had just begun, we have now gone from strength to strength and many people have had the pleasure of sowing, growing, harvesting and eating their own vegetables. The garden has also become a source of inspiration to everyone who visits.
Using the sound ethics of 'permaculture' in our design we have gone from gorse hillside to gorse walled garden! Everything coppiced on site has been used as a valuable resource as an example of true sustainability, and we now have 15 beds (some 30 ft long) under cultivation in the form of 3 terraces which follow the contours of the hillside. Our first courgettes were harvested at the begining of May, followed by broad beans, lettuce, rocket, potatoes and many other vegetables and flowers that brighten our salad bowl at lunchtime. The garden is run entirely on a voluntary basis and all the produce grown is shared amongst volunteers and visitors (which vary from a 2 week old baby to a 92 year old lady who braved the steep steps!). One of the highlights came at the end of June when we had a visit from 'Garden Organic' Ryton, who gave a short talk about the larger national project called 'Organic food for All' of which we are a part. Since then we have fund raised for the garden by doing the annual Llangollen 'Plodathon' organised by the Rotary Club, taken part in the Glyn Garden Society Show, recently been successful in gaining funding and also for our conservation efforts been rewarded with some amazing wildlife. An Apple Day is planned for the end of October where people can bring their own apples to be made into apple juice using a press made with Ceriog Valley oak. So, if you're tired of chemically produced vegetables. - concerned about health. - would like to learn how to grow your own food - get away from the everyday stresses in a relaxed outdoor environment - or would just like to visit. Croeso i bawb / All welcome. Phone Judith on 01691 718127
