May

David became known to us very early on our arrival in the Glyn in 1981. When my husband, Paul Chalmers, was keen to start a village magazine with local news, he was very aware that he might be proposing an unwelcome idea. He was told that such a project had been tried before and failed, but David was so enthusiastic and supportive, that together with the publishing expertise of Geoff Bell, the three of them decided to give it a go.
The Community Council agreed to help for a year, and then to assess whether an annual grant was appropriate.
Meanwhile, with previous backing from Lord Trevor of Plas y Garth, who was also very keen on the experiment, and some other donations, the 'hit and miss' printing began in the garage of 13 Berwynfa on a Gestener machine. David contributed much copy for the Glyn News in the early days and provided Paul with so much local history and many stories of the past, that without him, it would have been extremely difficult to get the monthly magazine launched.
So thank you David. We shall all miss you so much and many generations are so grateful for all you did to add to the rich identity of Glyn and Ceiriog Valley.

The death occurred on 21 March 2007 at Wrexham Maelor Hospital of Mr David Lewis Jones, aged 92. He was a well loved and much respected resident of Glyn Ceiriog. His father had died when he was young, leaving him as head of the family, caring for his mother and brothers and sisters.
He started work as a drum operator in the slate quarry and when war broke out he went into the army. During that time he was stationed in Greece and Italy , and many other countries. He made the most of his time there by reading and learning as much as possible about each place.
On leaving the army, he trained as a painter and decorator, and worked in many places of interest in the locality. Prior to his retirement, he worked at the Derwen Centre in Gobowen.
He active member of Seion Chapel and successfully completed a course to become a lay preacher.
All his life, he liked travelling and was a keen photographer and gave many talks and showed slides of his travels.
He had been both a clerk and local councillor for many years, a school governor and member of most local organisations including the local choir. He had worked diligently and voluntarily on the gardens and on The Cross and at both cemeteries. David Lewis Jones was a true pillar of the society.

What Money Can't Buy
Money is a necessary part of living. Without it, we couldn't secure the necessities or luxuries of life. But there are things money can't buy. A famous preacher W. A. Criswell said, 'Money will buy luxuries, but it will not buy spiritual power. Money will buy advancement and preferment, but it will not buy the recognition of God. Money will buy favour and accolades, but it will not buy soul respect.'
The greatest good, so great that it is in a category all by itself, cannot be bought. If the entire human race were to bankrupt its resources in an effort to buy forgiveness of sin and eternal life with Jesus, it would be infinitely insufficient. All the wealth of the whole world cannot purchase the supreme blessing of forgiveness and heaven.
We'll never accumulate enough riches to purchase a place in the paradise of God. But there's good news! Salvation can be ours, 'without money and without price' according to Isaiah 55:7 'Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near.'
Have you trusted Jesus as your Saviour? You need only to stretch out your empty hands in childlike faith to the Lord as stated in John 1:12. Cry out to Him and confess your sin.'He will abundantly pardon'(Isaiah 55:7)
I am redeemed, but not with silver;
I am bought, but not with gold;
Bought with a price, the blood of Jesus,
Precious price of love untold, Gray
The faintest knock of faith opens wide the door to forgiveness.
Yours in Christ

Ann and Anthony, daughter and son of the late Margaret Bolton, wish to thank all of our families and friends for their very kind words of sympathy, the many sympathy cards and attendance at our Mum's funeral.
Also, the generous donations made to the British Heart Foundation.

The Indian Ocean Tsunami of Boxing Day 2004 devastated vast areas of coastal land around the Indian Ocean and the plight of those affected galvanised many of us to respond with offers of help.
Those offers of help materialised into the sum of £350 million, which was distribution by the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) working with charities such as Cafod, Save The Children, Oxfam and Christian Aid.
In this hour of extreme need, the Ceiriog Valley as always, came good.
Fourteen Valley men and a dozen ladies became the support staff for a concert in the Pavilion in Llangollen, which raised £27,000 in one night. DEC have written to thank you for your support. The details have been set out in a leaflet which can be seen at the Christian Centre.
So well done the Valley and many, many thanks to you all.

The present price paid to our dairy farmers is unsustainable and is leading to a drop in home production as many farms are diversifying into other crops or leaving the industry altogether, to ensure that there is a good supply of home produced milk for our children and grandchildren we need to help the British Dairy farmer by buying fresh British milk and dairy produce NOW before imported milk becomes the Only option.

Missed last months news, the month just seemed to go by so fast.
This month we start with a big thank you to all the children from Ysgol Pontfadog who have spent Friday afternoons with us again. They have visited Dolywern for quite a few years now and we enjoy their company very much. Looking forward to the next session when they come around again to play cards, Bingo and dominoes, etc..
An old friend came to judge the Easter Bonnet competition. The exhibits were, lets say 'interesting" and "different" even perhaps "beautiful" but not "boring."
We are looking forward to some trips out as the weather begins to improve and hope to use the picnic basket again so it's all aboard the Skylark and we are bound for Bala,Vyrnwy and Ellesmere not to mention Llandudno. Regards Diane @ Dolywern

I would like to thank my husband very much for the lovely party on the occasion of my 65 birthday. Also many thanks to the Swan Inn for the wonderful catering. Many thanks to all my family, neighbours and friends for all the cards and gifts I received.
Diolch yn fawr

On Sunday, 4 March I saw Council workers clearing away rubbish along the hedgerow on the New Road —fine, great, it was needed. However, Monday, 5 March taking the children to school I found that the Green (Gamer) was like a rubbish tip, bottles, baps, packets, cans and even a bag of dog poo (left in bus shelter). It's not only the New Road that this happens, it seems that it's 'the thing to do' ie., drop rubbish anywhere.
What has happened to our village, don't people care anymore?
We were 'The Prettiest Village' for two years but as it is now we will never be that again.
Please do not drop your rubbish, take it home or find a bin (OK a few more bins would be good) but let's have a little more respect for our lovely, friendly, wonderful Glyn.
I wake up every morning and give thanks that I live here. Please, please, please let's get it sorted! Pick it up or better still don't drop it in the first place.

A big thank you to all who sponsored me in the recent Swimathon at Chirk Leisure Centre. Having so much support really spurred me on to complete 2.5 kilometers, that's 100 lengths in just over an hour. I was relieved to complete it, but also really pleased to raise £130 for the Marie Curie Charity.
Thanks also to my mother-in-law, Rona Bates, who made sure I didn't cheat! A grateful and relieved Jane Bates.

As many of you are aware we have had a number of ‘teething problems’ but at last our new Centre is ‘up and running’ and able to offer a number of activities; and we thank you for your support and patience!
In addition of grants towards construction The Trustees and Management Committee have been able to secure funding for various activities of interest to all ages and abilities as well as equipment for tennis, netball, badminton and various coaching sessions. Additionally we will be offering Keep Fit, Ju-Jitsu, Yoga and over 60’s Gentle Exercise classes, together with ballroom / tea dancing lessons. We also have funding to provide Mountain Bicycles for hire and training.
The outside courts are set out for Tennis, Volleyball and Netball will be available for use with floodlighting, for early evening activities in the future
Other activities include a morning sessions with Ysgol Meithrin, Young People’s and Duke of Edinburgh Award Evenings, Computer Lessons and an Internet Café, Quilting and Sewing Groups, Craft Groups and various activities are planed for the Summer months. The Centre has full access for the disabled and those in wheelchairs and will be used as a Polling Station in May.
In the future the foyer area will be available as a ‘drop in /café’ and by arrangement as a warm, dry place to wait for the bus. The Centre can also act as a contact point with the travelling library, for you to leave your requests and deposit/collect your books.
We believe the Centre has a great deal to offer but are anxious not to ‘compete’ with other venues and our hire charges are set to reflect the facilities we feel we can offer.
In short the 2 Meeting rooms and the Court hire are £5 per hour, and the Main hall £10 per hour—and we have a fully equipped kitchen which is complimentary in the hire charge.
If you require further information or request a booking form please telephone the Centre on 718200 at any time. If no one is able to take your call leave a message and we will get back to you within 24hrs.
We welcome your support and suggestions for the Centre’s development now and in the future, and will update you regularly on how things are going.
Look out for posters and newspaper articles for any new activities and start dates of courses.
We look forward to seeing you all.
Best Regards,
Helen Crossley on behalf of the Management committee
