It should be mentioned that even though air raids were terribly frightening and stressful we did have a good laugh, now and again. I remember one such occasion, when my mother told me to go the local coal-yard for a quarter of a hundredweight (about 15 kilos) of coal. At that time a coal fire in the kitchen grate was, in the large majority of cases, the only means of heating a home. Like so many other things at that time coal was in short supply and the owner of the coal-yard did not deliver to the houses as due to petrol being rationed he only used his lorry to collect the coal from the railway sidings. He did however, have a few hand carts and it was possible to hire one of these to get the coal home. On this particular day I went to the yard, my brother had to look after our baby sister. The baby was in her pram and Jim was taking her for a walk. He decided to come with me to the coal-yard and on the way we got the idea of taking out the pram's wooden slats which concealed a false bottom, putting in the coal, replacing the slats and sitting our baby sister in her usual place. This done we set off for home. Part of the journey being up hill it was much easier pushing the pram than a heavy coal cart and of course, there was no return journey. All went well until we were halfway up the garden path. Baby Joan had somehow got hold of a piece of coal, her hands were black and she had a moustache. Having nothing with which to wipe her hands and face, it being cissy for to carry a handkerchief, we tried to sneak in without being seen. No such luck, we met mum coming out with some washing, all was revealed and we each received a crack round the legs with a wet towel; very painful, I can tell you. Later on we overheard mum and our next door neighbour enjoying a good laugh about what had happened. With our legs still stinging, I am afraid we didn't share in their laughter at the time. This episode has since become a family joke and both my brother and I can laugh about it now.

Hope the festive season went well for you.
Our Christmas spirit started on the 25th of November with the Christmas Market, which was great and we raised over £450, so thanks to everyone who gave a hand and to the kitchen for the GOOD FOOD AND DRINK and cakes for the cake stall. On the 13 December the Residents Christmas party was as they used to say, ' A Gas' as we were rocking and rolling to the Invisible Band and enjoying GOOD FOOD AND DRINK. A great big thanks to Ellesmere College , Ysgol Pontfadog, Weston Rhyn and Glyn Choirs and Llangollen Rotary Club for their visits and music: it really gets us in the festive mood and we try to say thanks with some GOOD FOOD AND DRINK. The Residents went to so many Christmas parties I've lost count but thanks to The Garden Centre and The Glyn Valley (who we visited twice in a week) for a making us so welcome and serving up GOOD FOOD AND DRINK The Kitchen Queens (and I include Walter in this) provided a good choice of menu, which was originally devised by the Residents over the Christmas and New Year and as you may wonder with all this GOOD FOOD AND DRINK we are now looking at all the available diet books in W.H. Smiths, so if you have any suggestions which mean we can avoid redundancies in the Kitchen and allow us to keep on with the good food and drink please let us know. I will be putting out our new programme of events ASAP, so please come along to anything going on. Regards Diane@ L.C.Dolywern.
